What are caffeine pouches? A plain-English guide
A caffeine pouch is a small, soft sachet you tuck between your gum and upper lip. It holds a measured dose of caffeine and a bit of flavour. You leave it in for 20 to 30 minutes, then take it out and bin it. No water, no cup, no swallowing anything.
They are new enough in India that most people meet one before they have ever read about one. So here is the whole thing, without the marketing.
How a caffeine pouch actually works
When you drink coffee, the caffeine has to go down to your stomach, pass into your small intestine, get absorbed into your bloodstream, and then go through your liver before much of it reaches your brain. That round trip is why a coffee typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to do anything useful.
A pouch skips most of that. The inside of your mouth is thin and densely supplied with blood vessels, so a good share of the caffeine crosses straight into your bloodstream through the gum tissue. This is called buccal absorption, and it is the same reason some medicines are designed to dissolve under the tongue.
The practical difference: most people feel a pouch in 10 to 15 minutes rather than 30 to 45. It is not more caffeine. It is the same caffeine taking a shorter route.
What is actually in one
A well-made caffeine pouch is a short list. FUEL pouches contain:
- Caffeine from green coffee beans, dosed at 100 mg per pouch
- Plant fibre that gives the pouch its shape and keeps it comfortable
- Flavour and sweetener, sugar-free and zero-calorie
What is not in one matters just as much. No nicotine. No tobacco. No sugar. No calories. If a pouch product contains nicotine, it is a completely different category with completely different rules, and it is not what this guide is about.
How much caffeine is 100 mg?
Roughly one strong cup of coffee, or two espresso shots. For context, the widely cited safe ceiling for healthy adults is about 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources. That is four pouches, but it is also your morning coffee plus your afternoon tea plus a pouch, so count everything.
Most people settle at one or two a day. Start with one and see how you respond before you go further.
Who they are actually for
Pouches win in the gaps where a drink is awkward:
- The gym. No shaker, no powder, no 300 ml of liquid sloshing around while you squat.
- Deep work. You do not break focus to walk to a coffee machine.
- Driving and commuting. Nothing to spill, nothing to hold.
- Late study. No cold half-cup going stale on the desk at 2am.
- Gaming. Hands stay on the keyboard.
They are worse than coffee at being coffee. If you love the ritual, the warmth and the taste of a brew, a pouch is not a replacement for that and is not trying to be.
What it feels like
There is a mild tingle where the pouch sits for the first couple of minutes. That is normal and it fades. The energy comes on more gradually than the tingle suggests, and it feels level rather than spiky, because you are not also absorbing 30 grams of sugar alongside it.
Effects generally hold for 30 to 45 minutes with the pouch in, and the caffeine itself stays in your system for a few hours after, the same as any other caffeine.
Are they legal in India?
Yes. Caffeine is a food ingredient, not a controlled substance. What matters is that the product is manufactured and labelled under FSSAI rules. FUEL is FSSAI licensed and made in India. As with any caffeine product, it is for adults 18 and over, and not suitable if you are pregnant, nursing, or sensitive to caffeine.
